Description of About Matilda

A stunning novel about a small girl's experiences in an orphanage run by nuns. Funny and heart-breaking in equal measures it is a story for readers who were moved by the true life stories Kathy's Story and Suffer the LIttle Children, and the film, The Magdalene Sisters.

When five-year-old Matilda arrives in her grandmother's house she's not sure what to expect. She never had a grandmother before. Or a grandfather. Or uncles. Her mother ran away so her father has brought Matilda and her sisters and brothers from Australia to live with his family in Ireland. At first it's lovely in her grandmother's, but it's not long before everything goes wrong and Matilda and the others are on the move again.

It seems that her heart's desires - her mother, a home and a hug - are just too much to expect, and Matilda learns to make the best of things. Despite her father's increasing craziness, and despite the half-understood secrets that haunt her, Matilda finds trust and affection in the most unexpected places.

By the time she is sixteen Matilda realizes that the only way to get a life, is to claim it, and that means taking on her over-powering father - not just for herself, but for her whole family.

About Matilda is warm and funny, heart-rending and startling, dignified and redemptive, a vivid novel about growing up in terrible circumstances told from the heart of a child.

'A new literary heroine ... a wonderfully drawn character, endearing and shocking in equal measure' Irish Independent

'Covers painful ground, but it is a gentle book ... Matilda lingers in the memory' Irish Examiner

'An enchanting yet perturbing tale' Sunday Independent

'Told through Matilda's endearingly innocent and canny eyes ... kind and unflinching' Irish Times

'Utterly convincing ... the dark atmosphere is relieved only by Matilda's open-hearted spirit' Ireland on Sunday

Mary and Maria, Matilda: AND Matilda (Penguin Classics)

Description of Mary and Maria, Matilda: AND Matilda (Penguin Classics)

These three works of fiction - two by Mary Wollstonecraft, the radical author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and one by her daughter Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein - are powerfully emotive stories that combine passion with forceful feminist argument. In Mary Wollstonecraft's Mary, the heroine flees her young husband in order to nurse her dearest friend, Ann, and finds genuine love, while Maria tells of a desperate young woman who seeks consolation in the arms of another man after the loss of her child. And Mary Shelley's Matilda - suppressed for over a century - tells the story of a woman alienated from society by the incestuous passion of her father. Humane, compassionate and highly controversial, these stories demonstrate the strongly original genius of their authors.

Description of Scowling Matilda: Caregiving Mean Old People

This story is mandatory reading if you are thinking of care giving for anyone you don't know that well, or anyone you have already established is mean. I wish that I had read the whole truth about possible worst case scenarios before we destroyed our lives. In hindsight I can see that in their own vague ways some of our friends hinted that it might be difficult. My idea of difficult and what we actually faced are in two different galaxies! We have still not recovered our lives. Please don't ignore warnings. If you're reading all the singing, holding hands books about care giving, you need to read this too, for balance! This is the absolutely true story with only names and identifying details change to protect the guilty and the innocent.

Description of The Big 5-0: The Adventures of Matilda Mason

Bored, beleaguered, and slightly bloated, Matilda Mason, takes a good long look at her life...on her 50th birthday, no less...and is faced with disappointment. She has spent her life being who she thought she was supposed to be: an obedient daughter, faithful wife, loving mother, loyal friend, and a darn good reporter for the garden section of the hometown newspaper.
When she hits the Big 5-0, she feels now that she's on a deadline to make her old dreams of being a serious journalist come true...before she runs out of time.
She wants a change. She wants some recognition. She wants a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Is that really too much to hope for?
Matilda's staid and steady life is about to change and her wish is granted whether she's ready or not.
Luckily, plucky Matilda has the gumption to weather the storm and has plenty of friends and family to help her through. It will take some quick tap-dancing to get her out of one scrape after another.
Author Peggy Browning has created a charming cast of characters in this debut novel...people you would swear are living right next door...
Her story line is fast-paced, lively, and down-right funny. Visit with the charming residents of Cambridge, Texas and you'll long to hear from them again in the upcoming second book of The Adventures of Matilda Mason series.
